LET’S GET ACQUAINTED WITH IT-GIRL CAROLINE VREELAND
Our newest Modern Muse is singer, fashionista, model, and all-around cool girl Caroline Vreeland. We kicked off our interview by chatting about all things style, the true meaning of indulgence, and her iconic brand.
Q: Night owl or morning person?
A: I've been a night owl my whole life. Now I'm up so much that I found some peaceful solace in the mornings that I never knew about.
Q: Montreal or New York?
A: Montreal to live? Absolutely. New York to visit.
Q: Heels or boots?
A: Heels.
Q: Dress up or dress down?
A: Dress up.
Q: Pasta or dessert?
A: Pasta. Something happened, though. [Pregnancy] made me a sweets person.
Q: Self-care to you in one word.
A: Indulgence, whether it’s a decadent bath or a good bottle of wine or a little masturbation...indulgence covers all. Seek pleasure wherever you are is my motto.
Q: When do you feel your most confident?
A: When I’m admitting my flaws.
Q: Describe your music.
A: There is a sense of urgency in my music because when I'm writing songs, usually it's in reaction to something that's happened. I have to express those feelings in the moment. Before I got pregnant, I would write about how love was not working out or I was angry at a lover or a friend. But now that I found my little Canadian bacon, I thought, will I still be able to write music? What's coming up next is that I'm really honoring a whole new phase of love and how it can still be interesting, even if it's not completely broken.
Q: Personal style during pregnancy versus postpartum?
A: Personal style during pregnancy isn't a thing. Thanks to you guys, there's options. Before I got pregnant, I was like, I'm walking to the corner store and I'm going to turn it all the way up in a teetering heel and go the extra mile. During pregnancy, I'm like, give me my Uggs. Comfort was never a concern before. And then during pregnancy, it's just like, comfort. Please www.apeainthepod.com — give me comfort! But you have a way of making it elevated.
Q: A memorable fashion moment from your career?
A: The first time I performed when I was pregnant in New York, I did a show at the Mercury Lounge. I had on a fur crop top with my belly hanging out, which I thought was so…I mean, Rihanna's doing it now. And then we changed into a Marc Jacobs black and white groovy psychedelic outfit for the performance. I felt at the height of my femininity.
Q: What do you like to sing to your son?
A: We dance and sing and make songs about random stuff like the nuts in the bowl...we'll just sing about whatever's in front of us. He’s my muse.
Q: What's something that you're looking forward to with your son?
A: His first time smiling or giggling.
